What is a Magnet School?
Originally created with the explicit goal of promoting school desegregation, magnet schools are public schools of choice that provide distinct choices for students with different interests, talents, and aptitudes. Magnet Schools promote diversity so that students are prepared to live in a multicultural society and global community.
The Pillars of Magnets include:
- Diversity
- Innovative Curriculum and Professional Development
- Academic Excellence
- Leadership
- Family and Community Partnerships
After graduating from MSMHS in 2020, I felt well prepared for college and equipped to contribute to academic conversations thanks to the discussion-based classes I had taken in high school.
I was nervous about transferring to a new school as a sophomore, but the staff and student body at MSMHS made the transition seamless, and I felt welcomed with open arms.
The field experience the aqua lab provides is so unique. Even if you are not destined to be a marine scientist, having hands-on classes in the lab is always something to look forward to.
I also heard friends at other high schools talking about hiring counselors outside of their schools to help prepare their college applications. I never even considered this at MSMHS; my guidance counselors were incredible and walked me through every step of the process. I was able to graduate from American University a semester early thanks to all of my UCONN ECE credits from MSMHS. Ella Bergendahl, Class of 2020
