The only prerequisites for applying to MSMHS are:
- Students are residents of Connecticut at the time of applying
- Currently enrolled in the 8th grade (for applications for the MSMHS freshman class)
- Currently enrolled in the 9th grade (for applications for the MSMHS sophomore class)
Applicants are selected through a random electronic lottery process.

Southeastern Connecticut Magnet Schools are committed to serving military families and their children. If slots are available, Marine Science Magnet High School may assist highly mobile families who transfer to the region following the regular application period.
